thomas and i were talking tonight about the year that is about to end, what was good, what what bad, what was hard, what was easy. the hard list was long this year. the easy list was short. i was a bit discouraged when i sat down to craft this post, thinking that difficulty had dominated this year. but as i searched my photo files i found that the good was abundant and that the good was always there; my delightful kids, my wonderful husband, and the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. those constant goodnesses i tend to take for granted until i realize how hard it would be to deal with the difficulties without them.
“Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he has been robbed. The fact is that most putts don’t drop, most beef is tough, most children grow up to be just like people, most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration, and most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. Life is just like an old time rail journey ... delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.”
