8

reagan is 8! he had his birthday and birthday party on the same day and that doesn't just happen.
it was a wonderous and glorious day that started out with 2 breakfasts. he's a cereal lover after my own heart and a mcdonald's breakfast lover like thomas. the best of both worlds.

we had the most perfect weather, which i am pretty sure is the result of much prayer. outdoor parties in mid-march bring me to my knees like nothing else.

i got a little crazy with the cupcakes. after a pep talk from a crafty friend, i decided that i could do something beyond ordering my regular costco cake. behold, my creations! go ahead and pinterestize this:

we did a repeat from last year. we stick with what works.

an artistic shot of my budding tree and the bounce house showing the seamless blend of nature and industry.

and yet some kids shunned the modern entertainment and stuck with the old stand bys. birthday party hipsters, if you will.

"pig" from word world made an appearance.

blythe, the pine cone licker. poor third child. always filthy.

it was pretty fantastic. i love when people love reagan. there is no better feeling.

and the gratuitous photo parade of my delightful children:

reagan was even lucky enough to experience his first 8 minute long time out on his birthday. one minute for every year of life. he kept turning off the blowers that keep the bounce houses up and running whilst scarlett was at the top of the slide. funny, but totally and completely dangerous.

but all fun things must come to an end. bedtime was gloriously simple that night.

seriously, the 3rd child is adorably disgusting. she is a blender without a lid just waiting to be plugged in.
the end!

blythe's favorite things

things blythe likes:

rudolph

hers is a violent love.

measuring cups

climbing in her toy basket.

this may be her most favorite place. she goes from swinging the bathroom door and crawling over to the shower door and commences swinging that one around and before she rediscovers the bathroom door again.  minutes and minutes of fun.

her mother's daughter. staring at herself in the mirror. notice the movement of the garbage can.

i finally had to move it to a new permanent position inside of a closet. that swing top flap was just too tempting.

but the bathroom garbage can isn't the worst. this is her grossest favorite. the dog's dish. it's magic.

it's one of the things that motivated her to crawl.

our dog hates us so much. but, as a result of blythe's wandering, his dish has never been so clean and frequently refilled.

and last but not least, scarlett's baby doll. blythe has declared it her all time favorite amen and amen.

babies having babies.

friday fun!

friday fun! each friday we do fun stuff! normally we spend every day after school doing around 2 hours(or more! yipes!) of homework and other therapies with reagan plus ballet or choir or whatever other activity we have going on and it's really no fun. important and critical, but no fun. i call it "homeschool afternoons". but friday we try and compensate for it by only doing fun stuff. i LIVE for friday fun. it's the one day of the week when i don't feel like i have to make my children better citizens and we can just embrace being the regular schlubs that we are. normally, friday fun means homemade pizza(with my bread maker, which i am now AWESOME at making) and a movie night after the kids "clean" up their rooms. however, last friday was our town's daddy daughter dance for scarlett and so we made it reagan's choice of dinner and a movie with mama.

scarlett was pretty pumped for this year's big daddy daughter dance after last year's debacle of having a silly mom who couldn't buy tickets in time. this year she had a silly mom who came through in the clutch and bought tickets with weeks to spare.

thomas's quote of the night, "it was the best night."

meanwhile, the mama son date started with a trip to the classy mcdonald's drive through, by request. reagan wanted his picture taken, but not of his face. he wanted a picture of himself making movies on his leappad. so, there you go:

and our movie night. finding nemo is a modern classic.

so, everyone needs friday fun. i can't wait til the next one. i can deal with monday-thursday homeschool afternoons when i know friday fun is around the corner.

from the mouths of babes

scarlett had a couple of really awesome moments this week.

1. we were conversing at the dinner table about playing with her friends and she asked me, "do i need to get skinny?" my internal mom-o-meter is flipping out but i try and remain calm and collected(like i am naturally) so i can get more information out of her before i go ballistic on whichever of her little friends planted this ridiculous idea in her head. i asked her, "who told you that?" her response was that a neighbor girl who has been a bit of a toxic friend in the past had stated that they both needed to work on "getting skinny". i'm gripping the table with white knuckles to keep myself from running across the street and telling off this little 6 year old but i asked, "so what did you say to her?"
scarlett's response? "i told her that God made me this way and that i am perfect just the way i am."
.

2. today scarlett kept telling me that she wanted to talk into the microphone at church. she said she had a testimony that she wanted to share. so, i figure, after everyone leaves we'll go back into the chapel, turn on the microphone and she can say whatever she wants. no harm, no foul. she was really, really nervous but she walked up to mic and said, "i want to bear my testimony. i was riding my bike and i was scared to go down the hill so i thought about Jesus and then i knew i could go down the hill. in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."

so, at 5, she's way more mature than me. i'm taking the rest of the year off from parenting.

and i made these matching skirts because they don't know how dorky this is yet.

how not to train for a half marathon

i ran a half marathon on the 12th. it was super hard. mostly because i didn't really train very well because of my recurring hip and knee injuries. plus, since the course was in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains, i couldn't go more than 10 feet without having to go up or down some mammoth hill. i could now write a book called, "how to not train for a half marathon and end up hating yourself for 2 solid hours".

*hi, i look like a creepster. smiling when i actually didn't feel like smiling.

around mile 6 i really starting feeling pain and i was ready to quit but my dear friend and running partner/athletic mentor/positive attitude purveyor amy stayed with me the whole time(even though she is the most incredible runner last year did the boston marathon and could have run the course twice in the time it took me to lace my sneaks) and she gave me pep talks and rubbed numbing cream on my leg every few miles. everyone needs an amy.

i ran my slowest time ever. i've never wanted to quit running so much in my whole life. i had the worst attitude. the bad attitude is really what made it terrible. i've run through a lot of pain in the past few months but as soon as my brain decided that i couldn't do this race as well as i would like, it was the hardest thing ever to convince myself to keep trying. running is hard. but the mental anguish of being a quitter would be a gazillion bajillion times worse than running slow. i'll take being slow any day over being afraid to try.

but, every race and training regimen has it's lessons:
1. negativity only makes a bad situation worse.
2. i can run long distances without my ipod. i know! crazy! i normally would claim that the only reason i can run is because of music. most of this training was done without music. i ran this entire race with good conversation.
3. i can run long distances with a water bottle in my hand. i am still nursing the baby and it was much easier to get dehydrated as a result. it took a solid month to get used to holding the bottle without clenching my shoulder muscles or sloshing the water all over myself.
4. running is still one of the best times to pray. i love being alone. i love communing with nature. i love to exercise. what a great time to pray!
5. everything is better with a friend. now i just need to convince thomas to run with me.

the worst part of all though was the fact that they passed out coasters instead of medals. LAME. you can't wear a coaster around your neck.

glorious! glorious!

glorious! glorious!

how glorious to hold a baby!

sometimes i will hold her and feel full to bursting!

i'm in love, i'm in love and i don't care who knows!!!

and yes, she does almost always have a messy face.

lessons from 2012

just a short list of things i've been reflecting upon lately:

*everyone has something that they are crying themselves to sleep about. 9 times out of ten, it is something we would never guess or would never be privy to.
if you don't think so, just you wait.

*humility is often earned. it's a badge of honor for surviving difficult times.

*each trial includes blessings. during and after.

*"there should never be just 2 options: perfection or giving up... growth and development take time. learning takes time." brad wilcox

*i need to be anxiously engaged in a good cause, NOT over-anxiously engaged. set a good pace.

*time goes by so quickly. trying to slow it down is my biggest heartache.

*shutting up is really important. we should all try it sometime.

*supporting your spouse is one of the most important things that you can do. always.

*i'm glad that i have a desire to change. i want to get over my anxiety issues and feel free to do what i need to or not be overwhelmed by guilt if i DON'T do something.

a couple of my resolutions-
*heed the promptings to serve. plan to serve more, but in smaller ways. not everything has to be a production to be effective.

*keep a better record of my family in my journal and on my blog.

christmas: a month long travelogue

christmas is pretty much the greatest and we all know it. there are always a bajillion things we MUST do and even more things we MUST EAT and we run around like crazies and if we don't do it, christmas is ruined. and if we do all this with our kids, EVEN BETTER!

SO,
since everyone loves a travelogue, here's a travelogue! it's my gift to posterity!

scarlett was in a christmas parade for her cheerleading class. she was by FAR the best. naturally. she is so funny and sweet and very serious about doing the moves properly.

we saw the requisite amateur yet nearly professional incredible light show.

and it cooled off enough that i was able to bust out my fur trimmed sweater! hurray! low 50s!

thomas surprised me with my present early. i told him that for my gift from him, i wanted to go a on a bunch of dates. so, for the first date we went to red robin as a family whilst my new car stereo was installed. double whammy surprise!!! my CD player in my car has been dead for a while so i have been stuck listening to the radio and radio music is 95% terrible with the occasional styx song thrown in. i inhaled my bleu ribbon burger whilst thinking of all the great albums i could start listening to again instead of punching the radio tuning buttons until my fingers bleed.

since we decided to go to georgia for christmas day, we wrote letters to santa and asked him to visit our house on the 21st. he obliged.

reagan had 1 doable request(and plenty of absolutely ridiculous requests): epic mickey 2. also, he has a fascination with neon signs and memorizing the opening and closing times for stores so we surprised him with his own neon sign.

he also loves to put on puppets shows, so grandma sandy surprised him with his own puppets.
*note the gross old t-shirt he decided to wear as pajamas this night. i asked reagan to help me pack his bag for our trip and he ended up with one shirt and 5 sets of pajamas. go figure. we had to buy another shirt in georgia and rotate while the other was in the wash.

it's nice when you can actually guess properly on a gift.

scarlett mostly wanted repeats of what she already had. dolls and art supplies. but we were able to guess correctly with a barbie pool.

*scarlett eschewed traditional warm pajamas and wore a gross, stinky workout top of mine.

athena blythe was the only one in actual pajamas and she liked ripping paper.

on actual christmas eve in georgia we read the nativity story and wore actual pajamas.

and we opened a few more presents the next morning.

and this cute baby mastered hand to mouth feeding.

christmas dinner was spent at huddle house in middle of nowhere georgia on our way back home.

thomas and i had yet another date and saw jack reacher. thomas is a big michael connelly fan and a big tom cruise fan plus he got to sit next to me so this was his best night ever.

and when the fun was over, the laundry hag showed up. she's a little known and completely unappreciated member of the santa's crew. she trails behind santa a few days and spends an entire day griping and picking up laundry and shoving it in a black garbage bag because every single other laundry receptacle was full to bursting.
merry christmas.

fresh courage take

scarlett's kindergarten class had their class christmas party today and i was there helping out the room mother with the treats and crafts. it wasn't until i left the school after the party that i heard the terrible news about the tragic school shooting in connecticut this morning. i spent the rest of day reflecting upon the wonderful and safe setting that my dear daughter was able to enjoy in her class and contrasting it with the horrors those poor children at sandy hook elementary school had to experience. and by reflecting, i mean putting on a brave face for my kids whilst i surreptitiously wiped tears from my face because every time i thought about it, i felt like i was falling apart.

because of the terror and the evil was displayed today, i am reminded of how much i still need to learn. strengthening our families is the only thing that will combat this evil. we have to hold our families even closer and tighter. we must make educating and protecting our children from physical and spiritual dangers an even greater priority. we must take advantage of every opportunity to speak kind and loving words to one another. we must put aside grudges and forgive actual and perceived slights. when i think of how short so many innocent lives were cut today, i can't imagine wasting any more time dwelling on insignificant things when there is so much service that needs to be rendered and relationships to be strengthened.

i thought thomas' facebook post from today was especially poignant:

"Today I outlined the words to a personal Facebook post. I wanted to post about my experiences as a high school football player, how the sport transformed me from a chubby, picked-on, sarcastic, know-it-all (why did I get picked on?) into a believer. A believer in the power of hard work, discipline, teammates and, ultimately, myself. I wanted to post about how proud I am that the institution that allowed me to become a believer is competing for the highest football honor (a state championship) tonight in Atlanta and how my undying loyalty to that institution compels me to drive three hours one-way to cheer that institution on to victory. Pretty self-indulgent stuff. But given the tragedy of today, such a post just doesn't seem that important right now. My faith and my love of my family keep pulling my emotions and thoughts back to people I don't know who today suffered immeasurable losses to an unspeakable horror. So in lieu of my thoughts, I instead invite all of you reading this post to offer a sincere prayer to your Father in Heaven, a prayer of gratitude for what you have and of comfort for those who have suffered such terrible losses today. Then, follow those prayers up with actions, Christ-like actions that make the world better. And, I'll leave you with a quote from fictional Coach Eric Taylor of the Friday Night Lights TV Show (my fave), since its seems to apply to both high school football and to all of us as we reflect upon the tragic events of today: "God, give all of us gathered here tonight the strength to remember that life is so very fragile. We are all vulnerable, and we will all, at some point in our lives... fall. We will all fall. We must carry this in our hearts... that what we have is special. That it can be taken from us, and when it is taken from us, we will be tested. We will be tested to our very souls. We will now all be tested. It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves.""

i am grateful for my family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. His gospel is perfect. it is the only thing that will give us peace and understanding in a world of turmoil. i know that though difficult times may arise, there are brighter days ahead.

"My beloved brothers and sisters, fear not. Be of good cheer. The future is as bright as your faith." -Thomas S. Monson
